Jojoba

Jojoba (the Latin name Simmodsia chinensis) is a shrub or a small tree with meaty blue-green leaves and dark brown fruit, autochthonous to desert areas of Southwestern USA and North-western Mexico, as well as other desert areas of the world.

American Indians and Mexicans have been using jojoba oil in their traditional medicine for a long time – to heal cuts and other wounds, as hair conditioner or body cream, in the kitchen, and for their rituals.

Even today, with its many soothing qualities, it is still used in cosmetics. It has also been proven that it would make a good alternate source of gas, for the researchers in the United Emirates have discovered it causes less emissions and less engine corrosion as oil-based diesel gas.

What is so unique about jojoba oil?

It has a particular chemical structure, unlike other essential oils. It is actually a monounsaturated liquid wax that forms long chains of fatty acids and alcohols (instead of large, branched molecules in other oils). This enables the skin to absorb jojoba easily and not remain on the surface, making the skin flexible and soft without being oily.

Refined oil is completely without smell and a perfect golden colour, a great base for cosmetic and aromatic products. Due to its low melting point, the jojoba wax remains liquid the entire time and can be used directly, without thinning or leaving an oily feeling as others tend to do.

Chemically, jojoba oil is very similar to sebum, the natural skin wax on the surface of human skin. Our skin tends to produce less and less of it with ageing (also, with continuous washing, we remove the powder, filth, and sebum along with it, while the cold, dry air additionally dries the skin). This, in turn, causes wrinkles, the skin grows thinner and more fragile, consequently welcoming diseases, such as psoriasis, dandruff and redness (rosacea), for the dehydrated skin is more susceptible to irritations and microbes. Jojoba oil substitutes sebum, softens the skin, providing a natural source of hydration. Due to its similarity with sebum, the skin absorbs it easily and rarely develops allergic reactions even in the most sensitive users.

On the other hand, in teenagers and those with oily skin, jojoba oil melts the excess sebum, blocking the pores and the emergence of acne. On one hand, it is a deep cleanser, on the other, an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, and soothes irritated skin. With regular use, it controls acne outbursts and presents a safer alternative to the Australian tea plant.

Jojoba oil contains several important nutritional substances, like vitamins E and B-complex, minerals silicon, chromium, copper, zinc, and iodine, which provides the ability to fight the bacterial and fungal infections, like herpes, warts, and acne, among others. Jojoba functions as a natural antibacterial and antifungal agent; studies of the University of Michigan and the pharmaceutical department of the University of Port Elizabeth have shown that five of the most common skin bacteria do not survive in the presence of jojoba, including staphylococcus.

Jojoba also contains a high level of antioxidants, which gives the oil an unlimited expiration date, and the oxidants in it reduce free radicals in the skin, preventing decomposition of cell membranes and consequently premature ageing and wrinkles.

It is an excellent natural cure for sunburn, chapped lips, dry cuticles, feet, and hands, providing softness and smoothness. With hydration, which eases the itchiness and dryness, and by building a protective layer, it is very effective in solving eczema issues (the allergic reaction to different irritations on the skin) and psoriasis. It also reduces the risk of developing secondary infections by preventing the microbes to enter the infected and chapped skin, and providing an additional antibacterial and antifungal protection, while the antioxidants in the oil boost the weakened immune system.

Let us not disregards the effects of jojoba oil on dry and oily hair, in regulating hair loss, hair growth, and dandruff control.  The vitamins and minerals provide nutrition, protection, and general well-being of the scalp, while sebum and other ingredients enable normal hair growth.
