In love with the sun

Our favourite pastime is spent in nature with the sun above us, just laying around or doing sports or other activities. Sun is good for our well-being, soothes the soul and lifts our spirits. Sunlight has beneficial effects on our skin by stimulating the production of vitamin D, which is essential for our health.

In the last years, the ozone layer has become thinner, making excessive sunbathing and exposure to ultraviolet rays extremely damaging (sunburns, sun allergies and other). Excessive sun exposure is also the most important factor in skin ageing. The damaging effect of sun rays cause up to 70 % of the skin’s ageing.

We know two kinds of ultraviolet rays.

  • UVB are short waves of ultraviolet light and tan both upper layers of the skin. Only about 10 % of this light infiltrates the dermis, however, enough to collapse the ties between collagen and elastin, causing the loss of elasticity and premature ageing in the skin.
  • UVA are long ultraviolet waves, most prominent by the equator and in higher altitudes. These rays infiltrate deeper into the hypodermis, skin loses more elasticity, inevitably wrinkles and ages prematurely.

All of the above should make us even more vigilant when exposing ourselves to the sun and provide our skin with special care and suitable sun protection.

Advice on sun protection

Do not expose yourself to the sun between the hours of 11:00 and 16:00. During that time, it is best to retreat into closed, cool spaces.
Water and sand deflect sun rays onto our skin. Therefore, apply sunscreen regularly, every 2 to 3 hours.
In case you cannot avoid sun rays, make sure to protect your skin with a suitable sunscreen with a high sun protection factor, which holds off the UVA and UVB rays.
Apply sun protection at least half an hour before stepping into the sun. Apply generously and wait till the skin absorbs it.
Despite the waterproof label on sun protection products, it is necessary to apply sunscreen each time after getting out of the water, for it washes off and does not provide the same protection as before.
Newborns and young children should not be exposed to the sun between 10:00 and 17:00.
People with light and sensitive skin should also avoid the hours around noon, they may get sunburnt in less than 5 minutes.
Use additional protection in the form of hats with wide edges, sunglasses, sunscreen and long-sleeved clothing of thick texture and light colour.
Be aware that no cream offers complete protection.

Light or dark complexion?

Striving for a darker tan, many use solariums or expose their skin to the sun long-term, both very damaging to the skin and body in general. Tanned complexion is out of style, has been for a while, and damages our health. If we strive for natural tanning, there are organic solution we can use. Luckily, there are many ways to tan naturally, for example self-tanning products, tanning oils and butters, darkening oil. Oils, butters, or a combination of both, with vegetable extracts, do not contain oil derivatives, parabens, silicones, or artificial colouring agents, therefore guaranteeing the best nourishing and hydrating care for our skin, with an attractive tanned look.

Apply these products carefully for the mixtures can be phototoxic and cause a reaction at the contact with UV rays, in the form of itchiness, redness, blisters, burns or permanent pigmentation spots (hyperpigmentation). Therefore, do not expose your skin to the sun after application.
